Lee Chang-dong at Tokyo Filmex

Tokyo Filmex have just announced that South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong will be helming the jury at this year’s festival. His latest work “Secret Sunshine” will also be screening as the closing film. Hope I can pull some strings to at least get an autograph…

I ordered the DVD too before I found it it’d be playing Filmex (I’m sure I would have ended up buying it anyway). I saw “Green Fish” back when I was living in New Zealand and I’ve been a fan of his work ever since. His sheer mastery of the medium obscures the fact that this will be only his fourth film. Criterion should be all over his stuff.

have you not jumped on the ‘lee chang-dong collection’ out in korea (once again) recently? ‘green fish’ (which i love), ‘peppermint candy’ (astonishingly heartbreaking, disturbing too) and ‘oasis’… stunning director.

I picked that set up when it first came out a few years ago. Anyone who doesn’t have it already should order it immediately.

it’s okay. i think. does it compile tracks from the films? i can still find CDs for ‘peppermint candy’ (i want the music that plays as the train goes down the track) and ‘oasis’ is still out there too… need to look for the ‘green fish’ one, but they’re actually still in print which is surprising, and they’re about £6 each. cheapo. thanks anyways… i think.

you a fan then? probably the closest i’ve come to what i would term ‘cinema’ that i’ve watched out of korean… not strictly arthouse, not pure entertainment, but none the less it is artistic and entertaining, and very filmic. waiting on ’secret sunshine’ to ship from korea any day now… make that 2 autographs you need to get :)
