It may sound strikingly similar to Park Chan-Wook's recent Berlin competition entry "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK", but Kwak's film would appear to be much more literally titled.

It's described as a sci-fi action love story about a university student named Jiro (Koide) who meets a cyborg from the future (Ayase). Filming started in January in Kobe, with Kwak helming an almost entirely Japanese cast and crew. The shoot is scheduled to wrap in mid-April, and the finished product is set to open in Japan and South Korea sometime in 2008. Today came the announcement that there will be not one but two sequels, filmed consecutively a la "Lord of the Rings" et al. Shooting will begin sometime next year with a 2009 release in mind.

Producer Hirano Takashi says the plot for Dororo 2 and 3 has already been laid out, with the first sequel focusing on the secrets of the Dororo character played by Shibasaki Ko and taking place at sea. He also stated that the combined budget for the two sequels is 6 billion yen, and that the production team are looking to shoot on an island somewhere in the Pacific.
Jason Gray has broken the news about Kitano Takeshi's new film, "Kantoku - Banzai" (which might be translated as "Viva La Director"). There's not much to add to his report except that the cast also includes Takarada Akira, Yoshiyuki Kazuko, Fujita Yumiko, Suzuki An, Kimura Yoshino, Osugi Ren, Terajima Susumu, Musaka Naomasa, Watanabe Tetsu, Moro Morooka, Sugata Shun, Ishibashi Tamotsu, and Ide Rakkyo, with narration by Ibu Masato.

The seven films of varying genres that Kitano's director character attempts to make in the course of the story have been infused with his particular brand of cynical humour, and are apparently all based on actual proposals for his follow-up to "Takeshi's".

Although all the spin is about Kitano's attempt to make something crowd-pleasing and (hopefully) lucrative for a change, the subject matter still sounds very self-referential and not too far removed from the unconventional, semi-experimental approach of "Takeshi's". I can see current parallels between him and Kurosawa Kiyoshi, who has been going through his own genre-eschewing, wandering in the wilderness phase. Hopefully "Kantoku - Banzai!" will be more of a return to form than Kurosawa's self-repetitive "Retribution" was. Nakatani voices the heroine Jita.

No CG was used in the movie, which employs 115 marionettes manipulated by 22 puppeteers. It took five people to control one marionette using strings over five metres in length, and took four years and 600 million yen to complete. The movie opens on April 28th.
Where Japanese film is at in '07

A recent thread on the Kinejapan email discussion list about the current state of Japanese film elicited a fantastic post from Aaron Gerow, a highly regarded Japanese film scholar and one of the list's owners. As it's the most perceptive and succinct appraisal of the industry I've seen anywhere, here it is reprinted for posterity's sake, with the permission of the author.

"It does seem like the papers and magazines are frequently running articles about the "healthy" Japanese film industry. You especially see the movie business appearing in the business pages more than you did in the past. There are a lot of films making money these days and it would be significant if hoga topped yoga for the first time since 1985 (some are already reporting that that is the case). But we should all note that most of these articles on the business point to a number of problems. I also encounter a number of people in the film community here who see the industry in crisis, not in a boom.

"Here are some factors of concern:

"1) While the hoga share is rising, the pie is not getting bigger. Maybe 2006 will see a rise in the total BO, but it will be too early to call it a trend. The total BO has basically gone up and down over the last five years and shown no major expansion. This all means that it is still debatable whether Japanese films are really capturing audiences on their own; perhaps fickle audiences are just temporarily separating from yoga. With total BO not increasing as the number of screens does increase, that means that revenue per screen is going down. The number of films released is also increasing, which means the revenue per film is decreasing.

"2) The hoga distribution market is radically unbalanced. In 2005, Toho films captured over 60% of the hoga market. That is one single company monopolizing 60 yen out of every 100 yen spent on Japanese movies. The situation probably will not change in 2006 since Toho just announced it had record sales last year (even though its year end releases flopped). Some are saying that with the rise of cinemaplexes, one of the evils of the Japanese film industry--the block booking system which basically prohibited 80% of the films from ever having access to the vast majority of theaters--has loosened up. And it is true that some of the films that are doing well on small release are getting picked up by the shinekon--something that didn't happen before--but with Toho being so dominant, the playing field is still tremendously skewed. This is especially the case with the rising force of TV capital. With the major hits all having TV backing, some of the business articles are reporting that theaters are refusing to show films without TV backing. And when theaters are showing non-Toho films, they are reportedly pulling the plug faster than they did before. As more films appear, it is not only getting harder to book a theater, but theaters are quickly dumping films that don't perform in the first week. Word of mouth hits are going to decrease and the market may separate into two polar opposites: TV/Toho majors and the rest.

"3) The major hits are mostly films backed by TV networks and/or based on TV shows. Many people say that Japanese are moving to Japanese movies because Hollywood films are getting repetitive and formulaic. But that is precisely what the Japanese majors are making these days. Not a few predict this boom will soon peter out. The question is whether the industry actually has the talent to produce original work that can bring in people. It is encouraging to see the rise of filmmaking programs around the country, but one wonders what kind of films they will make. I ran into a friend last weekend, someone who is a well-known director and teaches filmmaking at a major university, and he was quite depressed: none of his students, he says, go to the movies. They all want to make movies, but they make no effort to see movies, especially the classics. A lot of filmmaking programs don't even offer film history courses.

"4) But this is also a question of management. The Japanese film industry is undergoing a profound transformation as various media companies are buying up film companies. This shows that the contents industry is taking the movies seriously, but one wonders what they will do to it. A colleague told me the other day that last year the head of DVD/video sales of a major film studio called him to ask if director A was someone important. My colleague was floored: director A happened to be one of the major directors of Japanese cinema history, someone that anyone on KineJapan would know. And this was a director who was a major figure in that company for decades! And this was the head of DVD sales in that company! Oh My God! Is this the kind of personnel who are running the movie companies today? (In some ways it makes sense, because the people in their 40s who are becoming the kacho and bucho these days are the generation that never watched Japanese movies.) I have had complaints about how the film industry treats its own history and those who study it--I have long argued that they are shooting themselves in the leg over how they deal with their catalog of films--but this stunned me as well."

His last feature-length work "Bluestockings" (Jiyu Renai) was actually made for satellite TV, and you have to go back to 2002 to find his most recent theatrical release, "The Choice of Hercules" (Totsunyu Seyo!
・Saraba "Kaiju Shakedown"
Grady Hendrix has sadly decided to call time on his brilliant Asian film blog "Kaiju Shakedown". Thanks a lot to Grady and his editor Alex Romanelli for kindly mentioning Ryuganji.net from time to time, and hopefully it won't be too long before we see more of his absolutely smashing writing online again.

・Imperial couple to attend memorial screening for South Korean youth
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will attend a special memorial screening of Japan-South Korea co-production "26 Years Diary" (Anata o Wasurenai) on the 26th. The film is based on the true story of Lee Su Hyon, a 26-year-old South Korean student who was killed while trying to save a drunken Japanese man who had fallen on the tracks at JR Shin-Okubo Station in Tokyo on January 26th, 2001. "26 Years Diary" screened at the 2006 Tokyo International Film Festival, and opens on January 27th. (source: Nikkan Sports)

・"Love and Honor" gets extended run
Distributor Shochiku announced on the 18th that Yamada Yoji's "Love and Honor" (Bushi no Ichibun) will remain in theatres for the time being due to its enduring popularity. The Kimuya Takuya-starring samurai film was released on December 1st and has been seen by over 2.9 million cinemagoers to date, grossing around 3.4 billion yen. It's still doing well on around 330 screens, and will continue to play on 200 or so from February 2nd. (source: Nikkan Sports)

・Revenge-crazed actress to direct film of her own scandalous novel
Actress Ishihara Mariko (42) recently returned from years of exile in the United States to revive/destroy what's left of her career with "Fuzuoroi no Himitsu", a torrid expose of her relationships with several prominent figures in the entertainment world that includes a particularly graphic retelling of the loss of her virginity to actor (and voice of Thomas the Tank Engine) Morimoto Reo. Now she's going to direct a film version that will tell her life story, beginning with her childhood and focusing particularly on the domestic violence she allegedly suffered at the hands of singer Tamaki Koji. Production company Saidireku (who have extensive softcore experience) are putting the movie together, and auditions will be held to find someone to play Ishihara. Filming will begin in early March with a view to a May release, although a distributor is yet to be found.
